Zygomatic implants, with a short-time treatment, allow for the implantation of fixed prostheses, replacing traditional and bulky dentures. Solutions that can improve patient’s life to normal standard without recurring to mobile dentures are essentially two:
- bone graft
- zygomatic implants
Bone graft rarely achieves the complete reconstruction of the jawbone anatomy. Therefore, compromises are needed that involve the implantation of heavy structures to fix unresolved defects. Bone graft also poses other limits:
- it is impossible to anticipate the size of the bone at the end of the treatment (minimum 6 months).
- To avoid any risk, “teeth” can be implanted only 8 to 12 months after the first intervention.
- At least two invasive surgical procedures are necessary,
- success rate ranges from 60 to 82%.
WHAT ARE ZYGOMATIC IMPLANTS?
These implants are anchored in the zygomatic process (see picture above), on which -excluding unforseeable circumstances during surgical procedure- we can implement the “immediate loading” (within 72 hours from the procedure).
BENEFITS OF THE ZYGOMATIC IMPLANT
- One surgical procedure can fix the problem;
- reduced time: within 3 days, a provisional fixed prosthesis can be implanted to the patient, with a high level of functional and aesthetic comfort;
- high rate of success: between 98% to 100%;
- post-surgery discomfort minimized.
In addition, we know, since the beginning, where the zygomatic implants would be placed and what type of prosthesis is required. Zygomatic implants are not suggested for all situations where bone is missing or in poor condition. But, where applicable, they bring huge benefits to the patients (see table below). 
Both techniques must be implemented on patients in good health conditions, better if they are no-smokers. Bone draft procedure requires the patient to take at least 8-10 days of sick leave; at the end of the procedure, he/she will not have implanted any prosthesis, while a zygomatic implant only involves 3-4 days of sick leave, after which the patient has a fixed prosthesis. In conclusion, zygomatic implants are a valid alternative to bone draft; for the same price, patients get quicker treatments with higher rate of success and reduced discomfort.
